Indian football is going through a revamp under the newly elected management. There have been many positive signs and India is hoping to get back their glory days of the 1960s & 70s back soon. In Indian Football Hero Super Cup is comparatively a new tournament given the ages of the other esteemed tournaments. The inaugural season was 2018 in which Bengaluru Fc won the tournament and in the following year Fc Goa was crowned the champion. Since then the tournament went into a hiatus for 3 years and is again going to be played in 2023. Many fans also hold an opinion of this considering this tournament as a successor of the Federation Cup which was an annual knockout tournament like this.
The Super Cup starts today 8th April 2023. Today Bengaluru FC will face Indias division 2 side runners-up Shreenidhi Deccan in the 1st match while Kerala Blaster FC will face Rounglass Punjab FC the champions of the I league and the first team to get promoted from I league to Indian Super League since the promotion system and a proper pyramidal structure was given to Indian football ecosystem. In this tournament 11 Top division sides and 5 division 2 sides are participating. The 1st phase will be the group stage followed by knockout fixtures. The winners of the Super Cup will play Gokulam Kerala for a spot in the AFC Cup which is equivalent to the Europa League of Asia. The 5 2nd division sides were selected through qualifiers before.
A Challenge for the I-league side: It is definitely going to be a challenge for the 2nd division sides but a platform to prove a lot of things as well. Round Glass Punjab will have the biggest task of proving why they deserve to be promoted to the ISL next season after winning the I-league title in 2022-2023. They would look to prove in front of a strong Kerala side whereas Shreenidhi Deccan would look to surprise against the Bengaluru side that had quite an unbeaten run from the middle of the ISL season.
An opportunity: This is going to be a huge opportunity for talented young players who had quite a show in Ileague to impress the coaches of the big sides they would face. These young players will have to raise their levels a bit both on and off the ball.
There is huge excitement in Kerala and overall India regarding the 3rd season of the Super Cup. Kerala has been selected as the host for this tournament and after the declaration pitches were prepared up to the level. The tournament will boost the Indian football ecosystem and as it is happening in Kerala we can expect a lot of crowds out there to come and enjoy some beautiful moments of this game.
