Greatest Football Trios of 2010’s

Updated: Aug 1

Very few players have a long-lasting effect on the generation, creating history is very hard and to be in that competition where there are plenty of talented players already is even harder.

Football trios have come and gone but very few are remembered fondly, back when football was tacticless players used to help win matches with their brilliances, dribbling through opponents, long shots etc but what happens if you have a poll of talented players and come to know that they are very compatible with each other.

This is when a group has formed a group that can be quadruple, trios or even duos. Football has seen duos, trio’s but very few have been able to make their name for themselves like these trios and these trios have been particularly active in the same timeline of football, The 2010s of football.

Surely 2010 had been a great decade for football, starting from the World Cup in South Africa where a dominant Spain won their first-ever World Cup, to the rise of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the former scoring 91 goals in the calendar year while the later ending up bagging three champions league in a row. This is the season where we saw the rise of the three best trios in world football -

  • BBC(Juventus)

  • MSN (Barcelona)

  • BBC (Real Madrid)

BBC Juventus

The "BBC" of Juventus refers to the formidable defensive trio of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, and Giorgio Chiellini. This trio became the cornerstone of Juventus' defence and played a crucial role in their domestic and international successes during the early to mid-2010s.

Andrea Barzagli joined Juventus in January 2011 from Wolfsburg for a modest fee of €300,000. Known for his tactical intelligence, positioning, and ability to read the game, Barzagli brought a wealth of experience and calmness to the defence. Bonucci was signed by Juventus in the summer of 2010 from Bari for €15.5 million. Initially, Bonucci's performances were inconsistent, but his ball-playing ability and vision were evident. Over time, he developed into one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in the world.

Giorgio Chiellini has been at Juventus since 2005, establishing himself as a key figure in the defence. Renowned for his physicality, aerial prowess, and tenacity, Chiellini was the heart of the Juventus defence, often leading by example with his aggressive and uncompromising style.

The Formation of BBC of Juventus

The formation of the BBC wasn't an overnight success but rather a gradual process that saw the blending of different styles and strengths of these three defenders. Under the guidance of coaches like Antonio Conte and later Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus adopted a defensive system that maximized the strengths of Barzagli, Bonucci, and Chiellini. Conte's 3-5-2 formation particularly suited the trio, allowing them to operate as a cohesive unit with clear roles.

The trio's abilities complemented each other perfectly:

  •    Barzagli: Provided stability, consistency, and excellent positional sense.

  •    Bonucci: Acted as the playmaker from the back, with his exceptional passing range and vision.

  •    Chiellini: Brought aggression, aerial dominance, and leadership.

Understanding and Chemistry: Over the years, the BBC developed an almost telepathic understanding of each other's movements and responsibilities. This chemistry was evident in their seamless coordination, often making it difficult for opposing attackers to find space or exploit weaknesses.

Effectiveness of the BBC

The BBC was known for its ability to shut down some of the best attacks in Europe. Their discipline, positioning, and tactical awareness meant that Juventus often conceded few goals. The trio's ability to anticipate and intercept plays was second to none. They were versatile enough to adapt to different formations and tactical setups. The BBC maintained its effectiveness, whether in a back three or a traditional back four. This adaptability allowed Juventus to switch tactics mid-game without compromising their defensive solidity.

Chiellini's leadership on the field was crucial. His experience, along with Barzagli's calmness and Bonucci's technical prowess, provided a perfect balance of attributes. This leadership was particularly vital in high-pressure situations, such as Champions League knockout stages. Bonucci's ability to play long, accurate passes often turned defence into attack quickly, catching opponents off guard. This added an extra dimension to Juventus' play, making them more unpredictable and dangerous. The BBC played together for several seasons, during which Juventus dominated Serie A, winning multiple league titles and reaching two Champions League finals (2015 and 2017). Their consistency and longevity were key factors in Juventus' sustained success during this period.

MSN Barcelona

MSN Barcelona has been the best generation Barcelona has been able to produce in their entire history, It is not just because of this trio but the influence this trio had over the world, this trio bought FC Barcelona on the very maps of world football, A full South American trio that consists of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, hence the name MSN. A trio so deadly they racked up goals for fun, seeing them would be a joy as they did not “play” football they “celebrated” it.

How was MSN Formed?

The "MSN" of Barcelona, comprising Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Neymar Jr., was one of the most formidable attacking trios in football history. The formation of this legendary trio began with Lionel Messi, who had been a cornerstone of Barcelona since his debut in 2004. By the time MSN came together, Messi was already a global superstar, known for his dribbling, playmaking, and finishing abilities. His role in the team evolved over the years, allowing him to operate not just as a right winger but in a more free and creative position, often drifting inside or dropping into midfield.

Neymar Jr. joined Barcelona from Santos in the summer of 2013 amid a high-profile and somewhat controversial transfer. Neymar was already a star in Brazil, celebrated for his flair, creativity, and goal-scoring prowess. At Barcelona, he primarily played as a left winger, where his dribbling skills and pace allowed him to cut inside and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. His arrival marked the beginning of a new era for Barcelona's attack.

The final piece was Luis Suárez, who signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2014 for around €82 million. Suárez had just come off an incredible season with Liverpool, where he won the Premier League Golden Boot and was named PFA Player of the Year. Known for his clinical finishing, physical presence, and intelligent off-the-ball movement, Suárez quickly adapted to his role as the central striker at Barcelona. His ability to link up play and create space for Messi and Neymar was crucial to the effectiveness of the trio.

Initially, MSN was formed when manager Luis Enrique moved Messi to the Right-Wing position realising it would perfectly accommodate Neymar on the Left-Wing Surarez as a striker and Lionel Messi on the Right. And it all made sense, the trio instantly clicked and MSN was born.

Barca's football tactics of Tiki-Taka were a plus, this style helped the team to keep possession as these attackers continued to wreak havoc on the opposition. The team often played in a fluid front three, with Messi frequently dropping deeper to orchestrate play, while Neymar and Suárez interchanged positions and roles. This fluidity made them incredibly difficult to defend against, as their movements were unpredictable and their chemistry on the field was exceptional.

What was the Key of Success of MSN (Barcelona)

A key aspect of MSN's success was their unselfish play. Despite each being a superstar in their own right, Messi, Suárez, and Neymar displayed a remarkable willingness to assist each other and prioritize the team's success over individual glory. This unselfishness, combined with their complementary skills, made them a devastating attacking force. The trio also benefited from a strong supporting cast, particularly Barcelona's midfield, which included players like Andrés Iniesta, Ivan Rakitić, and Sergio Busquets. The midfield's ability to control possession and distribute the ball effectively allowed MSN to focus on their attacking roles.

Complementary Skills: Each player brought a unique set of skills that complemented the others:

  • Messi: Vision, playmaking, dribbling, and finishing.

  • Neymar: Creativity, flair, dribbling, and ability to take on defenders.

  • Suárez: Physicality, finishing, and off-the-ball movement.

During their time together, MSN achieved extraordinary success. In the 2014-2015 season alone, they scored a combined total of 122 goals across all competitions, setting a new record. Their performances were particularly outstanding in crucial matches, playing pivotal roles in Barcelona's treble-winning 2014-2015 season, which included victories in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League. Their effectiveness in big matches was often the difference-maker, showcasing their ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

BBC (Real Madrid)

BBC of Real Madrid consisted of Bale, Benzema, and Ronaldo. The three players were a powerhouse when it came to the counter. Real Madrid hit the jackpot in signing Gareth Bale as their bitter rivals Barcelona had been winning consistently and Real Madrid somehow lagged. This was also the very time BBC of Real Madrid clashed with MSN of Barcelona. One of the main reasons why mid-2010 was the best generation in football history.

greatest trio in football - Real Madrid's BBC

The formation of this formidable trio began with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in the summer of 2009 for a then-world-record transfer fee. Ronaldo's arrival marked the beginning of a new era for Real Madrid, as he brought his extraordinary goal-scoring ability, athleticism, and unmatched work ethic. The next significant addition was Karim Benzema, who joined from Lyon in the same summer as Ronaldo. Benzema, known for his technical skills, intelligence, and versatility, quickly established himself as a key figure in Madrid's attack, capable of both scoring and creating goals.

The final piece of the BBC was Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2013 for another record transfer fee. Bale's arrival added a new dimension to the team's offense, with his incredible pace, strength, and ability to score spectacular goals from a distance. Bale, Benzema, and Ronaldo complemented each other perfectly, with Benzema often playing a selfless role, facilitating play and creating space for the other two. Under the guidance of various managers, particularly Zinedine Zidane, the trio's chemistry flourished, allowing them to interchange positions and wreak havoc on opposition defences.

The BBC became synonymous with Real Madrid's dominance in both domestic and European competitions. Their ability to perform in crucial moments was instrumental in Real Madrid's success, particularly in the UEFA Champions League, where they won the trophy four times between 2014 and 2018.

This is the same team that won the La Decima in 2014 against Atletico Madrid. When Rafa Benitez had a problem managing this trio, the club’s very own Zidane took charge of this trio and made them a commanding team in world football.

How successful was BBC of Real Madrid?

These three also complement each other perfectly

  • Benzema usually sacrificed and made space for Ronaldo to drift in that central area

  • Bale with his exploitative pace and brilliant passing ability

  • Ronaldo with that sniper finish

The BBC (Bale, Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo) of Real Madrid achieved remarkable success and left a lasting legacy in football. Their most notable accomplishments came in the UEFA Champions League, where they won four titles together.

The 2013-2014 season saw them secure "La Décima," with Ronaldo setting a record for most goals in a single campaign. They followed this with three consecutive Champions League triumphs from 2016 to 2018, a feat not seen since the 1970s. Domestically, they were pivotal in winning the 2016-2017 La Liga title, ending a five-year drought, and the 2013-2014 Copa del Rey, highlighted by Bale's stunning solo goal against Barcelona.

Additionally, the trio helped Real Madrid claim multiple FIFA Club World Cups and UEFA Super Cups, reinforcing their global dominance. Individually, Ronaldo frequently topped scoring charts, while Bale and Benzema's contributions were crucial in key moments. The BBC's prolific goal-scoring and synergy, exemplified by their combined 100 goals in the 2014-2015 season, defined an era of unprecedented success for Real Madrid, with memorable moments such as Ronaldo's overhead kick against Juventus and Bale's dramatic goals in crucial finals.
