Chelsea secures their 2nd UCL victory back-to-back against AC Milan.

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

Chelsea won their 2nd Champions League game and both came against AC Milan by 3-0 and 2-0 respectively after a disappointing start to their UCL campaign with one loss and one draw in their opening to group stage fixtures. Graham Potter's side emerged as the more dominant team both on the pitch and on the scoreboard. Under their new manager, Chelsea looked confident and more sorted in their attack and midfield. The first goal for Chelsea came from a penalty and the second one was scored by Abameyang from open play.

FORMATION AND LINE-UPs :

CHELSEA ;

Chelsea went with a 3-4-3 formation. Koulibaly, T.Silva and Chalobah started as the back-3 . The attacking wing backs were Chilwell(Left) and Reece James(Right). In the midfield, there were Jorginho and Kovacic. In the forward line-up, it was Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling as inter-changing wingers and Aubameyang as the CF.

AC MILAN :

Milan went with a more attacking formation of 4-3-3. Giroud started as the CF and Rafel Leo as the left winger. Sergio Dest and Origi were on the bench.

MATCH ANALYSIS & OVERVIEW:

Chelsea was the dominant side with 70% possession and 93% pass accuracy. They had a total of 15 shots out of which 4 were on target and 4 shots were blocked. Along with 853 touches, Chelsea got 652 accurate passes and 12 key passes. Jorginho had the most pass accuracy with 88% accurate passes and was probably the key man yesterday for Chelsea on the field. Off the ball, Chelsea's movement was good as players were trying to get into the free spaces to allow open-up passing lanes and were having numbers' advantage on the midfield in most situations to have control of that. AC Milan was also slow on the press and closing down passing channels which was allowing Chelsea to pass easily and evade their marker.

Champions League games are always competitive, with every team trying to get the winning goal, so was this despite the possession and passing stats. AC Milan looked dangerous on counter-attacks and on the break. The fact that the game was flooded with Cards is proof of how competitive this game was.

How the Goals came?

18" - Mason Mount was fouled inside the penalty area by Tomori(AC Milan CB)

Mount got first to a through pass by Reece James from the right

side of the pitch after he made a perfectly times run behind

the defense line when he got pulled back by Tomori who got a Red

Card and Chelsea received a penalty. Jorginho fired the penalty home with a composed finish at the center of the net.

33" - On a Chelsea buildup and AC Milan's defensive mistake Aubameyang scored Chelsea's 2nd Goal of the night. As Jorginho gave a forward pass to Mason Mount

in the final third, Aubameyang could get rid of his marker simultaneously with ease. Mount just directed the pass toward Aubameyang who was through in front of the net and slotted it home at the near post to make it 2-0.

MENTIONS:

  • Jorginho: He was probably the best player on the pitch for Chelsea. He converted the penalty as well as was involved in the build-up and for the second goal. He had the most no.of accurate passes - 88 for Chelsea on the pitch.

  • Mason Mount; Has been impressive for Chelsea for quite a few games. That swift turn he took at 43" and took a low driving shot through which he almost scored as Tatarusanu had to pull a good save with a quick reflex.

  • Graham Potter - The Chelsea new boss would be a happy man as under him Chelsea has won 4 out of 5 games and 2 out of 3 UCL matches and one draw. He would want his team to continue his performance and not face the same fate his predecessor Thomas Tuchel faced in the club.
